When the Macbook Air first came out, I thought it was pretty pointless, with a fairly small 13" screen, no optical drive, and so forth. In the last few weeks, though, I've been working on different notebooks at various Starbucks, Peets and similar locations with free WiFi, and I'm starting to see the point.

Last Christmas, I upgraded from my tiny and very handy MSI Wind netbook to an HP DM3-1030us "ultraportable". Like the Macbook Air, it doesn't have an optical drive, it has a relatively small 13" screen, but it is pretty thin and light (and expensive-looking, even though it didn't cost more than a high-end netbook, and was 1/3 the cost of a MacBook Air.) What it DOES have is enough portability to easily fit in my soft briefcase and leave room for a textbook or two, it has a dual-core CPU and discrete graphics so it performs pretty well, but these are all low-power devices (the CPU maxes at 1.6GHz!), so the normal battery easily lasts for more than 3 hours even with full screen brightness, wifi, and normal surfing/app use. 4GB of RAM and 320GB of disk space on a fast 7200rpm drive are improvements over the MacBook Air, as well.

Even though we live in the modern Wifi cafe age, it turns out that *power outlets* are what are scarce. With this HP, I never have to worry about not being near an outlet, because I can do a whole morning's or afternoon's work on the battery. The keyboard is fine, and the notebook is small enough that it easily fits on whatever little euro-table the cafe provides, whether round, rectangular, or some funky shape. The screen is bright, and just big enough to allow proper viewing of web pages and documents, which the 600-pixel-high netbook screen never quite managed.

Unlike the MacBook Air, it's got lots of USB ports (one of which I use for a proper Logitech mouse), a memory card slot, and even HDMI to connect to a TV set! If I need to use optical media, I just plug in a portable drive to a USB port, but almost all of the time, USB flash drives are plenty.

Like I said, I finally understand the point of a MacBook Air, but I've found something even better. Thanks, HP!

[Revision of earlier review]
I ordered the Acer AO532h-2326 and 2 GB RAM expansion by Crucial suggested by Amazon, as well as the USB External CD DVD RW Burner Drive For Acer Aspire one.

The RAM I got from Amazon is listed under a different number than the number Crucial lists for that computer on their web site, and it didn't work at first. I ordered the RAM from Crucial, thinking that Amazon had got the number wrong. When it came, it had exactly the same number on it's sticker as what I got from Amazon (for a few dollars less) - and neither worked at that point. The Crucial site does say you have to have the latest BIOS, so I went to the Acer site and got the BIOS updater. After updating the BIOS from 1.08 to 1.25, the RAM I'd originally got from Amazon works fine. Be aware that different models of Aspire One have incompatible BIOS's, and if the BIOS is corrupted it can render the computer unusable, so it is important that the BIOS you intend to install be for the model number of computer you have.

Some people have reported problems with that optical drive, and the suggestion was made that it's the luck of the draw, with a variety of manufacturers' drives going into the boxes. The one I received works (reads and burns CD's, haven't tried DVD's yet) with the Windows 7 Starter that came installed on the Aspire One, and Device Manager says it's a Pioneer DVDRW DVR-K17B USB Device.

I like the netbook, though if I were designing it, the top cover and some interior surfaces would have the same matte finish that's on the rest of the exterior, but the way it shows fingerprints on the glossy surfaces is a minor complaint. I was surprised by the amount of force it took to plug USB cables or devices into the computer, but I assume that with wear it will get easier. I don't expect to use it as a primary computer, just for traveling (backup digital photos, web browsing, email), so I don't see any need to go beyond Windows 7 starter.

This is a great little Netbook and you get good value for your money on this one. I bought it for my wife and see is loving it, I even find myself using it sometimes. I realy like the keyboard on this one compared to many other Netbooks and that was one of the main reason for me picking this one.

PROS: Very compact and light-weight. Every standard feature desirable in a netbook, plus a few. Nice styling. Responsive, easy to type keyboard. Good price point. The dotted style multi-touch trackpad is surprisingly good. Distinctive Iron Man-esque styling.

CONS: Non-universal power adapter, not enough juice for gaming. HD Netflix Watch it Now unwatchable. No evidence that the Nvidia ION 2 chip is onboard, appears to be the original ION.

OVERALL: This machine blurs the line between netbooks and laptops, and at this price and size that's a very good thing. It is great for simple tasks like email, web, Putty, and OpenOffice. I would definitely recommend it for those applications. I would not recommend it for heavy duty multimedia or gaming, as it tends to struggle with hi resolution video or anything graphics intensive.

Detailed Review:

I got this computer for work, something I could slip into my briefcase and carry everywhere to take notes at meetings and have my schedule with me at all times. For these applications, this machine is perfect.

I haven't used Windows 7 before, and I actually like it a lot. I've been using Mac OS X for years and I have to say W7 is at least on par if not better. There are a number of small features that work really well and don't get in the way. It's nice that this computer has the full Home Premium version and not the Starter version that I assume is somehow stripped down for typical netbooks.

The fact that the ION 2 chip is not in this laptop is a bit disappointing. I probably would have purchased the older version (1201N, has a dual core Atom 330 processor) if I had known that. But for my purposes it really doesn't matter. I have a dedicated gaming PC at home for that stuff.

I highly recommend this machine for students and people who's work takes them to multiple locations. It is light and easy to carry around and has enough computing power and battery life to get you through the day. Check out the 1201N if you think you need more processing power, but really the differences are going to be minimal.

As an IT professional, having the right computers is important to me. I needed a replacement for my aging laptop that I could take with me when I am traveling. The EEE PC has a larger screen than most netbooks (the extra 2" makes a big difference), but it is small and light enough to be easily packed away. All together, it is about the size of a 1 1/2" binder (with the cords, seperate carry case, mouse, mouse pad, and external dvd drive).

It is impressivly powerful for it's size. The stats on it make it eligable to play games (if not at their best settings). Overall, it is a great machine set at a good price.
