This is my first laptop PC after using desktops for the last 11 years. All I can say is that I do not suffer from buyers remorse on this item. The touch pad is responsive. The laptop is very slim and portable. My only complaint is the screen is not a matte finish like the desktop monitors. (get alot of glare from light). I bought this as mainly a device to watch streaming movies and as a portable DVD player. I had it 15 days now so there is no way I can return it....its here to stay. Runs very quiet and the speakers are OK for a laptop. Does not get hot as the processor is a 1.3 GHZ duo core. Some of the plusses I like on this unit:
Runs Windows 7
Has a 9 hour battery life
Slim
Quiet
15.6 inch monitor

And as I stated, the only con is the screen is not a matte finish (gets glare from light)

Asus is the new kid on the block and they are coming up with some awesome technology. (They are also getting involved with electronic e-readers). I would say get this particular model as you get a nice 15.6 inch screen with a 9 hour battery life.

Clunky experience, feels cheap, bad support - slp - Seattle, WA United States
Try one of these in person before buying! The keyboard and track pad are offset to the left to make room for the numberpad, making it awkward to use. The keys also have a cheap feel to them, which is kind of a distraction when trying to work. The result is that I avoid using this computer unless it's the only one available. Battery life is good, but it's too heavy to take everywhere, so it mostly stays plugged in anyway. Device driver support for linux is weak at best.

I had trouble making the recovery media, and when I called tech support they were very unhelpful and wanted to charge me for the discs I was missing.

I have only had this for six weeks, but this little netbook is so fun! Worked perfectly right out of the box. Didn't have to load anything to make it find my wireless network. I'm very pleased and at this point, have nothing negative to say. Of course, it has only been 6 weeks. The keyboard is tiny as you should expect but I can type on it just as well as my other laptop once I am using it for a minute and my fingers get used to it. It is so light and convenient. I love it!

My granddaughter purchased this, although not from Amazon. This is her first computer. She made choices based on how she plans to use it (internet and light word processing, plus photo storage and viewing), and because even though she's a child, she travels a lot.

I make my review to this model HP Mini-210 1190, although her model is the HP Mini-210 1199, which at the time of this review, Amazon doesn't sell. Still, they have the same processor and hard drive, and the same Windows Starter operating system. The case on her model (and the tipping point when looking at netbooks in the store) is pink plaid, a stand out for most little girls.

It is fast, friendly and capable as an internet machine. The battery sticks out in an odd way, but really, it is designed to allow the netbook to tilt up and keep cool. It works. As with the majority of laptop-netbook products, don't block the bottom of the hardware.

We were unprepared for the stripped down Windows 7 Starter, though. I'd never heard of it and it is so basic, you can't even change the desktop wallpaper. Although that may not matter to business users, I must still point out that once you have a pink plaid netbook, you kinda wanna customize your wallpaper.

So we used the last license provided by the Windows 7 Home Premium I had remaining from my own upgrade to upgrade the netbook. Windows 7 Starter comes with an Upgrade Option icon (they know you'll be coming) and by inserting my remaining licensing key, her system was much improved. The Mini capably manages the higher grade operating system.

The power cord is old-style brick. By this time it seems that Mini netbooks should come with mini power cords, but not so here. The machine is lightweight, though, very appealing as a traveling companion, has all the basics for a business working person, an internet cruiser, and a child who loves plaid. Take note that it does not have a DVD player, although it does have several USB ports for attaching an inexpensive ( to ) external DVD drive.

Just that Windows 7 Starter nonsense. Just too stripped down to be useful. And the big brick power cord. Hate those things. One star off for those combined negatives.

UPDATE: Because of the unusual (although it shouldn't be by this time) screen resolution, we have found that many websites don't load correctly using Internet Explorer, so my grand defaults to Safari which works just fine.

I enjoy using my HP mini computer.

It is compact and yet the screen size is not too small.
It works at a good speed in downloading files and viewing video downloads.
The built in 802.11b/g WLAN is solid in data transfer, never fails-->at this point of 8 months usage.
The screen resolution provides crystal clear viewing and the keyboard is dreamy smooth.

All in all a very good purchase for me!

Biggest piece of crap netbook ever get an ASUS - boycentric -
Why on earth would HP make a netbook with windows 7 and an HDMI port when the processors cant even support youtube or streaming video? I have had nothing but problems with this computer and HP refuses to take responsibility for its inability to perform as it should. I have a tera byte of hi-def that I cannot play on this and HP have done the same thing over and over again.. take control of the netbook and poke around in there and do nothing. I have hours of video documentation of this little gem not performing as the video gets stuck and sputters along while the audio plays on and off completely out of synch EVERY TIME. The last HP 17 inch HDMIn I had was ok at first but the battery stopped working and they had to recall it. I had two fans on it keeping it cool until they finally asked for me to send it to them and it died two months after. I have also had the blue screen of death on the netbook. I am not an HP hater.. they have just have been no help and the CSR's dont know what to do with a produck that HP wont even support. DO NOT BUY HP GET ASUS OR DELL I HAVE TONS OF VIDEO ON YOUTUBE OF IT NOT PERFORMING LOOK UNDER HP MINI 311. by far the worst piece of crap out there.. I got it for travelling and its been a waste of my time, energy and money

Love this netbook! Researching and reading reviews of all the top rated netbooks led me to choose Gateway. Perfect look, size and weight. Set up was a breeze - going through the initial windows setting up passwords etc. Connection to printer went smoothly. Keyboard is very easy to type on as it is almost full size, it's just the shift and enter keys on the side which are smaller. Screen view is bright, sharp and clear. Touchpad is sensitive, and took me a bit to get used to, so I have a wireless mouse to use if I intend to work for a longer period of time - I'm just more used to that. I purchased the netbook to use at meetings, email, web surfing and travel. It's meet all those needs quite easily. It's so portable and easy to carry around. Screen view when reading documents is approx 1/3 to 1/2 the page at a time. For my uses the battery lasts a approx. 7 hours and 45 minutes. It takes a full 2 hours to fully charge the battery. Viewing video from youtube is not a problem - I feel that there's more than enough memory on this netbook. Also through Amazon I purchased the Higher Ground 10" mini shuttle case with cooling dock which is a fantastic case - I mention it because when I use it for 4-5 hours at a time the cooling dock really does it's job.

I bought this netbook for college purposes it handy and very compact but it only comes with the windows 7 start which mean you have a certain amount of time to use the programs and now I have to spend another dollars on top of the 0 to buy the programs and like I said before I'm a college student so I had enough to get te computer but now I have to try and save up so I can buy windows 7 and my collgeg books. So I kinda wished I read more into it and saw that the windows 7 wasn't a trailthing or I wouldn't have wasted my money. The netbook it's self is good it's stays charged and has long life it was giving me trouble on connecting to my wifi but that was an operator error.

My daughter needed a decent computer as my old one was not meeting her needs (never met my needs either). She only needs a computer for email, games and internet at this point, and this fits the bill for a good price. The lack of a CD drive is a minor annoyance, but for the weight and space savings I can transfer files to a thumb drive for her. The screen is small, but it doesn't bother her.

OK, so I finally converted to a PC after owning Macs for 20 years- for goodness sake, Apple, lower your prices! I could afford another Mac, but they've lost my business because their prices are so inflated. I've got to admit that the transition was painless and the set up was incredibly easy, even for a person such as myself who just learned to text 6 months ago. This laptop is just the perfect size for sitting on the dining room table, on my lap, or throwing into the car. It starts up quickly so I don't have time to walk away while it gets it's act together. The battery life has been enough for me so far to take in my truck for the day, the keyboard is well designed with a full, separate section for the nubmers, and the touchpad (which I hate using) isn't too sensitive- I've used other laptops where I had to tape a piece of cardboard over the touch pad because it was so sensitive! The screen is just big enough to allow a couple of windows to be open without me needing to find my reading glasses, and it looks as if there are lots of slots in the sides to plug things in if I ever find things I'd like to plug in :)

Stopped working within 60 days of purchase! - Milind.Kolekar -
I purchased this laptop from Amazon.com, while I was in US as a gift to my sister. After handing it over to my sister, things were fine for about 30 days. Today, the laptop has gone DEAD. The battery is fully charged, but upon hitting the Power button, nothing happens. I did a hard-reset, but no luck. It simply refuses to show any signs of life.

Its' my bad luck that this happened after returning home to India, and now I'm at the mercy of local HP support.

I bought this Sony Z12 (i5 520, 128GB SSD, 4GB RAM) laptop here on Amazon.com via the seller called Vanns about a month ago now. So this review is past the so called "honeymoon period" but relatively early on in the product life still.

First I will say that overall I'm quite happy with the Sony Z12. It does have some faults but more or less hits the mark for a certain usage pattern - the "road warrior" who wants a super portable but full service laptop with high-res screen. I've used various laptops in this mode in the past, including the Sharp Actius, the Panasonic W5 series and Y5 series. That is the perspective from which I review this unit.

The Sony Z12 weighs exactly 3 lbs with standard battery, which is super for a 13" unit and that makes it great. Its easy for me to carry it all sorts of places with basically no burden. The screen is bright, the 1600 x 900 resolution gives you a lot to work with, although from time to time you'll need to CTRL + or - to scale fonts up now and then. I cant imagine needing the 1920 x 1080 version! I would say this is probably the 2nd or 3rd best screen I have seen on a laptop, exceeded only by the MacBook Pros (13 15 and 17 inch versions) which remain a cut above this laptop. But compared to most PC laptop this screen is way better in brightness, clarity, black levels and contrast.

This battery lasts me about 4 hours in "Stamina" graphics mode with Windows on "balanced" power setting,, while I am using wi-fi surfing the net, typing documents and screen brightness at 50& or 60% ish. If I dim screen more and use the most aggressive windows power savings I get about 5 hours. That's pretty good for a unit of this type. I had considered getting the extended battery, which would have taken total weight to 3.5 lbs,but so far it doesn't seem necessary.

The keyboard is excellent. I was not expecting it to be so comfortable but it is. Good size and spacing to the keys. Much better than other implementations of the "chicklet" keybaord that I have experienced eg in Acer 1810 and the Apple Macbooks. No surprise though as Sony was actually the originator of these type of keyboards.

The unit is very speedy after doing all the updates to Windows and the VAIO updates. And it boots up and shuts down really fast. But out of the box it was a paradox: operating very fast yet booting and closing really slow. All that changed when I did the Vaio updates. The one that seemed to make the difference there was the update to the BIOS. And that is with a factory install of Win 7 pro. I didn't reinstall the OS,although I deleted one or two of the junk programs pre-installed.

Another issue I ran into was that wi-fi was fine for first two weeks then one day I connected to a Zyxel 802.11 g router at home and the wi-fi suddenly started cutting out, requiring a reboot of the unit. I eventually installed an update to the wifi card from Intel's website and that did the trick.

I operate almost only in "stamina" graphics mode and in this mode the laptop is whisper quiet - and actually quite cool. Looks like they didn't skimp on the copper inside. I have played around with the laptop in "speed" mode and there it does get noticeably noisier - a level of noise that for me would be a little annoying. But for my usage the integrated graphics is more than good enough so I really have no need to go to the dedicated graphics card at all.

A small disappointment is the AC adapter, which is clearly not fully thought out as a companion to a ultraportable of this type. The adapter is actually quite light for a 90 Watt power unit, but is a little bulky and has no facility for winding up the wires. On this one Sony gave a bit of effort (I've seen much heavier 90Watt adapters e.g. on Dells and Lenovos) but Sony could have done better still for their flagship laptop. The AC adapter on my old Panasonic Y5 was smaller and lighter - and that was like 5 years ago.

The build quality on the laptop is pretty good from what I can see. I keep it in a Zero shock memory foam sleeve so that I have protection without compromising on the light weight. It's a 3lb laptop so of course there is some flex - unit of this type will get its durability in fact by having some flex rather than the rigidity that can be built into a 5 or 6 lb unit. But I can see that it is built well. And the palm rest seems like it wont scratch easily as some. At least so far that's what I've experienced.

Overall this has been a great purchase from my view. I don't think its a laptop for all people. But for a classic road warrior who typically buys ultraportables, I think this is a laptop I would recommend without hesitation.

I have several computers. I got tired of lugging my 15 inch laptop all over the city. I looked at several net-books with a budget of about 300 dollars in mind.
After looking at about 6 or 7 net-books, most of them with Windows 7 and an
Atom N470 processor, I found this little gem. When I played with the Window 7
machines I noticed that the graphical response was sluggish. I assumed that the Atom processor working with 1 gig of memory and the embedded video processor were working hard under Windows 7. The eMachine net-book with Windows XP Home SP/3 seemed a lot more responsive and peppy and since the price was about 30 to 50 dollars cheaper than the other machines I bought the eMachine with XP. I have not been disappointed! I love this machine. It weights less than half my 15 inch laptop I bought in 2009. After cleaning off all the crapware and setting it up to work like my other laptop it spins like a top. I then connected up my external USB DVD burner to it and had no problem making backup driver and system restore disks.
I have this net-book in my backpack all the time. Time will tell if this thing
is built well enough to last 3-5 years. The thing is actually a re-branded Acer.
You should be able get a 6 cell battery for it to extend the discharge time to 6 hours or so. The eMachine website has the drivers for it and some documentation, but there is only basic online support for this model.
I highly recommend this model for it's speed and price. So far I have been running all kinds of popular apps and it hasn't crashed or locked up (yet).
My only gripe is that I wish there was a physical volume control(wheel)
to control headphone/line-out volume.

I bought this in June 2010, I don't know if that's after all the hoopla about the memory upgrade or not. I got the extra memory as I knew I'd need it, stuck it in and booted up without a problem. I installed Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (64bit), formatting the main partition of the hard drive in the process to get rid of all the bloatware and stuff I didn't want. I left the little factory image partition alone in case I didn't like the results with W7Ux64, but it runs W7 Ultimate x64 very, very well with the 2 GB's of RAM. The Toshiba website had all the drivers for everything I needed in the Windows 7 x64 configuration. I'm very happy with this little guy.

I'm an IT Pro, I don't do a lot of what other users of this computer might want it for. I use it for remote controlling other computers a lot, for instance. It's great to carry this little computer around the job site, I can be logged onto the domain controller while working on and troubleshooting the whole installation, adding new workstations to the domain, etc. It's one of my favorite tools in my inventory and because it's so small it goes everywhere with me. I can use it to remote into my main server and get software, access other client systems, it does everything I want it to and it does it very well.

To give you folks an idea of some of the other things I use it for;

I have a mount for it in my vehicle. I don't need or want 3/4G (wireless broadband internet that uses a cellular phone connection) because I can't use the internet while I'm driving anyway and everywhere I need it there's wifi. In an emergency I can just pull into any apartment complex and use inSSIDer to find an available network. Thanks to all of you who don't know how to or can't be bothered to secure your wireless, it's never a problem getting connected. I'm not doing anything malicious to anyone so don't get your undies in a bundle. There are also many businesses with free wifi so given the choice I'll use those networks rather than piggyback someones private, unsecured home network.

I use it when I take my nephew to Karate, I log onto the Karate Dojo's wireless (which I installed for them) and watch Netflix to pass the time. The computer connects easily to the AUX input on my car stereo so I have great sound to go with my viewing while I wait comfortably in my vehicle.

Being as the computer connects to my car stereo I have 60Gb of music to listen to when I'm driving. I never listen to the radio and I never listen to music I don't like. I had to tweak the hard disk shock protection settings a little, and the file buffering on WinAmp (that's what I use for playing music) but it works great. I have my music organized into play lists so a couple taps on the keyboard and I've got just what I want without being distracted from my driving.

On the rare occasions when I have time to grill a steak, I take the Toshiba outside and watch TV or whatever streamed from my main computer in the house. Windows Media Center connects directly to the monster that acts as a server in my home. No more twiddling my thumbs while the charcoal gets hot. I hate gas grills, btw.

I use the little guy constantly while sitting in the cattle section on airliners. I can listen to music or watch any number of movies that I've pre-loaded onto the machine before leaving home. I recently flew from the west coast to the east coast. I used it during the flights and layovers. I can make it from Los Angeles to anywhere on the east coast without running out of battery, that's pretty impressive. I get anywhere from 8 hours to several days on a battery charge, depending on how I use the computer. I have an inverter in the car so it's always charging while it's mounted in the vehicle.

I use it with my telescope to display sky maps for finding interesting things. I took it to the boonies for the Perseid meteor shower and it ran all night with battery charge to spare. Bear in mind that the computer isn't in constant use on these occasions and sleeps a lot of the time, but still it's nice not to have to find someplace to plug it in every couple hours. I have on several occasions forgotten to plug it in to grid power and left it in my computer bag, sleeping. Once it went for 3 days, used for what I needed and wanted it for, before the little 6 cell battery gave up. It's got impressive battery time.

So, maybe I got lucky or maybe some of the people that review this little machine don't know how to use it or have unreasonable expectations but from my experience it's a great little soldier. I haven't had a lick of trouble with it, not one issue. Oh, I take that back, with Win7 Ult. x64 the wifi power toggle doesn't work, wifi stays on all the time. I don't really care so I'm not docking a star for that. That's the ONLY thing I can think of that doesn't work as well or better than expected with a little 1.6 x2 Atom processor and 2Gb of RAM. I think I'm getting my money's worth out of this machine, and more.

I find that mine is very solidly built, the construction "feels" good and solid. The screen is sharp and crisp and the LED backlighting makes it easy on the eyes. The touch pad works fine but I don't like touch pads so I have a little mouse that I use whenever possible. At my desk I dock it to a larger monitor and full sized keyboard and mouse and that works very good too.

Speaking of getting lucky, I've noticed something that's kind of weird. I see a lot of cases where something I've researched as much as I did this purchase later gets a bunch of bad reviews that are way outside of and opposed to my experience. Either I'm very, very fortunate, God is blessing me, or there are a lot of people out there that don't know what they're doing. Computers are like cars, telescopes, and other complex machines, they have a definite learning curve and if you really don't understand them, best leave tinkering with the innards to someone who knows what goes where. Just a thought... Of course in the case of Toshiba giving people the wrong specs, well shame on them. I hardly ever have to call tech support so I can't vouch for Toshiba support one way or the other.

This is NOT the "laptop equivalent of a desktop", this is a netbook or as Toshiba calls it a mini-notebook. It's very small and it's not suited to more intensive computer applications than what it was designed for. It's not meant to replace a full size laptop or desktop computer. If you don't know the difference go to a store and look at one and try it out, then come back here and buy it because this is the best price I could find and I looked pretty hard.

Now, having said all of that, this is a fine machine in the Toshiba tradition. It performs flawlessly for what I use it for and the memory upgrade I installed in it worked without a hitch. The Operating System Properties page is showing 2Gb of RAM so it's doing what it's supposed to do. I use a 2Gb flash drive for ReadyBoost when I need the extra performance. ReadyBoost is a feature of Windows 7, it allows you to use a USB flash drive to act as additional memory, very handy on a computer that only accepts 2GB of RAM. If you have a little computer like this and don't know what ReadyBoost is, it's worth the effort to look it up and get a little flash drive to dedicate to it. When you plug in a formatted, empty flash drive the computer will give you the option of using it for ReadyBoost so it doesn't take a systems engineer to set it up, it's very easy.

Another tip for getting the most out of a small system like this. Lose that silly wallpaper. I have my desktop set to solid black but any solid color is the same. You're forcing the processor and video hardware to redraw that huge picture file of your kid, cat, dog, vacation, whatever, 60 times a second. It never ceases to amaze me that people will take a little machine like this and put a 5MB picture up as wallpaper, then complain because their computer is slow. That's an extra 300 megabytes a second, almost 15 gigabytes a minute, in system overhead. That's also a lot more drain on the battery. Just for a picture you never look at when you're actually using the computer because whatever you're doing is covering it up with it's own window anyway. I suspect that this is the reason Windows 7 Starter doesn't have the ability to change the desktop wallpaper, so that people don't put up huge picture files and then call Microsoft and whine because their computer is slow.

Anyone can get a lemon from any manufacturer of anything. Getting a bad machine isn't really a downcheck for Toshiba as long as they stand behind the warranty. It's a drag but it's not the end of the world. If their quality control were more stringent these things would cost a lot more, defeating the whole purpose of an inexpensive netbook. There's no guarantee that just because it worked when they tested it that you won't have a failure. Send it back and get on with life until your new machine arrives. If you stop buying a particular brand because you experience a warranty covered failure, eventually you're going to run out of brands to buy.

I'd like to touch a little more on the quality control issue. That goes for anything computer-wise. Microsoft could make bullet-proof operating systems, they'd cost ,000 a copy. Modern hard drives almost all have bad sectors, you don't notice it because those are marked by the disk controller as unusable. If they made them all perfect they would cost ten times as much as they do and no one would buy them, they'd buy the regular drives and ignore the bad sectors like we do anyway. There's a trade off between being competitive and being flawless but expensive. That's why reputable companies have good warranty service, they KNOW they're going to let some stinkers get out on the open market and they're standing by to take up that slack. I'll take 95% and cheap over 100% and I-can't-afford-it-no-matter-what expensive any day. You can't expect perfection and this is why. Your best bet is, no matter what kind of hardware you get, to use the crap out of it when you first get it. Stress it, run it, play with it, make it work hard. That way any failure should show up sooner rather than later. Don't baby it and don't abuse it. Computer equipment has a thing called "burn in" where the circuits get "used" to being used, sooner is better than later.

There are two different computers with two different processors in this family. If you have the BLACK cased computer, that's not the same as this one. It's got a different processor in it and that machine will accept DDR3 RAM, this machine will only accept DDR2 RAM so you have to be sure you're getting the right RAM for the right computer. I suspect that's why so many people have been having problems with the RAM upgrade but I can't be sure without actually seeing their machines. Check, then double check, before buying RAM. I bought the RAM upgrade but I checked the RAM specs, the chipset specs, and the processor specs before I ordered it.

My husband bought this 10" hp for me for our anniversary. He loves FOOTBALL and wanted me to stay in the rooom with him. I love the computer, email and games; so this was a way to keep us together. My only complaint is that we have had to purchase some additional things to make it easy to to hook up to the main computer. I also purchased a mouse and a bag to carry it in. I have had no problems since I purchased this product. The DVD CD-RW, speakers (sound,) battery, Windows 7 OS all work excellent. The computer does not get too hot like I've experienced with other laptops. I like the size. I can take it easily anywhere I go and still enjoy the large screen and keyboard. The finger pad takes some getting used to. It can be very touchy. I would also like to see Lenovo put the power cord in the back instead of the side of the laptop for more convenience. The software came preloaded with no disks. I would have preferred to have them. Also Office Suite Professional was only a trial, not a part of the software.

Love the computer; for the price it's a step ahead of everything else. Only thing I run into is there seems to be something glitchy between the Lenovo software they've installed and the Windows 7 home system; I regularly find that I have to restart the windows explorer shortly after logging in, and occasionally have the computer slow way down when plugged in yet can't find any background program that is running. Otherwise it's brilliant; I love the layout, the screen is beautiful and works great under many lighting conditions, and the textured track pad and the joystick button are better than most options.

I've had a 12" iBook G4 since 2005 and it's still my favorite notebook for browsing the internet, writing letters, and even reading pdf's. It's very lightweight and I consider the screen the perfect size. It's held up very well. One of the keys has a hairline crack and one of the rubber feet on the bottom fell off but I clean it every month or so and it still looks almost new.

My only criticism is that it gets a little warm so I keep it on top of a clipboard when holding it in my lap. No viruses, no crashes, no worries.

When netbooks started becoming popular a couple of years ago, I had to laugh because I already have a lightweight, handy netbook. In fact, I'm using it right now to write this review. Given a choice between a new Asus or Dell netbook or a used iBook G4 for the same price, I would take the G4 without thinking about it for a second.

I got a 12 in used today and already want to sell it. The 1 gb memory is so small, that you can't even do the updates the computer needed if you have downloaded anything. The computer is nice, it's a great size, and graphic are good. But this is a HUGE problem for me. I did not realize how fast 1 gb goes, until I got this computer.I will probably get a Mac again I will just need something with WAY more memory.

My wife and I were going away and we decided our regular, full size laptop was going to be too cumbersome to bring with us. We picked up the Acer Aspire One D250 after testing several netbooks. This was purchased last October, and almost a year later, the unit has performed well. The unit we purchased still had Windows XP installed new, which was a blessing. At the time, Vista was a disaster and I was glad that Microsoft made an exception for ultra low cost PCs to still come pre-installed with XP. We purchased it from a major retailer that had it bundled with the DVD drive/mouse/case and an SD card for under 0, which made it a slam dunk to buy.

It came pre-loaded with a lot of software running, including Norton Internet Security. Out of the box, too much pre-loaded software caused the unit to run terribly slow on 1GB of memory. After removing much of it, the unit runs Office and surfs the web with ease! It can handle mostly all websites with ease, but some software will bog it down. I use it for mostly playing simple games, surfing, and Office, and with that I am very satisfied, because that's what I bought it for. If your looking to edit photos and video, you will be sorely dissapointed

The on board speakers are sub par, and the sound card is also not good. If you plan to listen to a lot of music, stay away from this netbook. I watch YouTube clips sometimes which didn't affect me as much, but the actual music output is very sub par. The on board sound did cause my review to lose a star.

The USB ports are well placed, as is the Ethernet port and the multi-card reader. The unit is great at copying and storing data. The 160GB hard drive is perfect for holding/displaying documents, some music, and lower-resolution photos. Video playback is iffy on this unit, and HD resolution playback was very choppy, as can be expected with this processor.

Battery life has been impressive. I have used the unit 4-5 hours at a time without any major complaint. The bottom of the unit gets downright hot after awhile, even if it is idle.

Overall, I will buy another Acer if I want to get another netbook. Even though the iPad will be tempting, for the price, Acer has proved why they are a major player in netbooks.

Beware of Acer Netbooks - Mystery shopper -
We bought ours Acer on the 3rd Dec 2009 and it went bad in july2010.The motherboard went bad.Thats gives it a lifespan of 7months.It's definitely a waste of good money and acer should be ashamed of themselves for ripping off good people.So don't let the looks fool you, right now we are using our old Dell and it's been around for a few years now.Don't buy Acer.

Overview:
I have been using this netbook (AO532H-2268: 160gb,1gb) for over a month and it has exceeded my expectations. I expected more "gotchas". I can safely and confidently recommend it for similar uses.

My expectations and uses:
I needed a very light, inexpensive, long-battery-life computer to complement my desktop so I could write a book, surf, watch videos while in the outdoors or during breaks on my bike rides. It does all of those just fine ... simultaneously even.

Keyboard and trackpad:
The 93%-sized keyboard is fine. I am doing a fair amount of typing on it and I am somewhat fussy about keyboards and this one is very acceptable. The arrow pattern helped sell me. I played with the trackpad (pretty good sized trackpad) for a while and the multitouch. Two finger squeeze zoom works okay in most apps and I do use it but, in general the multitouch is not that compelling in my opinon.

Display:
Crisp, bright, no bad pixels. I have used it successfully in full sunlight. 10.1" is adequately sized for a mobile device.

Exceeded Expectations:
It runs faster than I expected. If you use shortcuts, then it snaps along well.
It runs much longer than I expected. 10+ hours despite box only saying 8.
Network is faster than I expected for wired connections. 1gbps is sweet. Wireless locks quickly, seems solid.
Video performance (YouTube or locally stored) has not been choppy.
It uses less RAM than I expected.

Despite what some reviewers have recommended, I have not upgraded RAM, that would be a waste in my opinion. To test RAM usage, I ran two videos simultaneously in VLC and Media Player along with Word, Excel and Access and a browser. Task Manager showed RAM peaking out around 800mb and it did not seem to be swapping to disk. Typically it runs under 500mb. I am not saying that you can't max out its 1gb of RAM, but I am saying that I could not max it out using the applications that I typically use. In other words, Win7 and this netbook seem to manage RAM quite nicely with 1gb.

My upgrades:
- Based on what some reviewers said, I thought about upgrading Win7 Starter to Win7 Home and decided against this also because Win7 seems to be doing fine. There are a few annoyances that I got around: I did figure out a way to remove the default desktop image without installing software. I also figured out how to change the default screen saver.
- I did add an SD card I had lying around for ReadyBoost performance and it did seem to make a difference. I also use half of the SD card for backups. Adding an SD card is not necessary though.
- I applied a gorgeous matte skin from DecalGirl to keep the smudges down.
- I got a Boxwave matte screen cover to reduce glare and screen smudges.
- I might add some tactile dots to the FNC key and LEFT and RIGHT arrow keys to help me type in the dark.
- I bought a little slip case to protect it when in transit.
- I installed a full version of Microsoft Office and deleted all the junk apps that I could.


Bottom Line:
Based on my experience it is a great little netbook at a nice price. I feel made a good purchase decision. Good luck with your search.

Bought this netbook to use on a 5000+ mile trip in the western U.S. Wanted to keep in touch with email and use the internet while traveling for 30+ days and not have the bulk of my laptop. This Acer exceeded my expectations on accomplishing those tasks. I did take a wireless mouse with me - I find the touch pad to be a little sensitive, or else I'm just fumble fingered. I did discover that it is best to take an ethernet cable with you. Some motels chains realize that they don't have good wireless coverage in all their rooms, so they provide ethernet connections. I have a 10' cable, so I wasn't held to working on a night stand because of the placement of the wall connection. Also discovered that many small, non-chain, restaurants have WiFi(just ask the server) you can use while a customer. Battery life on the netbook is great. Overall, I would recommend this item.

This little 'netbook' is very small. I liken it too a poor man's OQO but it does its intended job: To get on the Internet. One cannot play WoW on it and expect it to mimic their home PC. Also it having a Celeron is something to hamper the expected performance of it. However, it comes underclocked! A good thing and a bad one too. That's to save energy and extend the life of the machine. I was blessed to get a version w/ Windows XP on it for a reasonable price. The first thing I did was to bump up the SO-DIMM RAM to 2GB and that seemed to help. The auto update (which I disabled) stuck me with XP Service Pack 3, so that ate up the already small HD. Getting rid of the swapfiles freed up over 5% of the HD, which is a lot for just an 8GB hard drive. The 701 SD possesses a SD card reader (hence its name) so one can save the solid-state drive some room. It seems to run a little hot when it's used for a while. The battery charges relatively quick compared to my Compaq V6444US.

Again, this thing is tiny and borders on being a novelty, but, its saving grace is access to the world-wide-web by 802.11 B/G wireless or the RJ-45 port. I'm going to learn to overclock this 'netbook' to speed it up to run the mandatory applications I installed like a firewall, spyware detector, Real-Player, Adobe Reader and Power Point viewer for the person on the go to take better advantage of the 'Net. This little computer is good for children, folks who are new to computers and for those who are out and about that want the reassurance of not losing data if hey drop the thing because of its solid-state drive. Keep in mind that this Asus Eee 701 SD can outdo the ENIAC (duh..) and it amazes me that a computer for a reasonable price can bee gotten by almost anyone and how far things have come and will go. A good buy that's built well but S-L-O-W compared to all modern home PCs. It's like 1995 all over again! Again, keep this in mind also: It's for the Internet. Knowing and reminding yourself of that you'll do fine and it will serve you well.

I really enjoy using this this netbook! I have had several of the acer and hp netbooks, but at 10.2 inches screens and approaching over 3 lbs I think they are getting away from the spirit of this laptop category. I primarily use this to look up things on the net through its built in WiFi and my wife and I have used it with great success on a recent trip to San Francisco tethered to my SPRINT phone as a modem. The keyboard is a bit cramped but I generally am not typing more than 10 words at time so its generally not an issue for me.

PROS:
- Tiny Size !!!
- Did I mention it's T I N Y ?? Barely bigger than a VHS tape.
- Featherweight at 1.9 lbs
- Good battery life for its size (I get 3-4 hrs)

CONS:
- Small Screen ( Non Standard Resolution, wish it supported 1024*768)
- Keyboard is small and can be a challenge for people with truck driver hands like me.
- Its not a speed demon, I wouldn't open up more than 6 tabs in FIREFOX

I purchased the Dell Adamo XPS about 2 months ago after debating between the raw performance of an Alienware laptop versus the thin-and-light Adamo XPS. I am glad to have chosen the Adamo XPS.

Unpacking the Adamo XPS, you'll see it comes with a 20 WHr battery, a mini-display port to DVI adapter, USB ethernet adapter, cleaning cloth, and power adapter with extension cord. The laptop itself is a mere 9.99mm thick and weighs 1.6 lbs with battery installed. The laptop comes with an Intel ULV processor, 128 GB solid state drive by Samsung (PM800 model if anyone wants to look at its specs), 4 GB of DDR3 RAM, Intel GM45 graphics, GPS and Skyhook wifi triangulation, light sensor, webcam, 802.11abgn, and bluetooth. The 13.4" widescreen is LED backlit and has a maximum brightness of 300 cd/m2 (translation, pretty freaking bright!). It also has a SIM card slot on the lower left corner of the chassis, but I cannot find any information as to whether it has WWAN built in or not.

Physically, the laptop has a very finished and svelte look and feel to it. After swiping your fingers over the capacitive sensor at the lid of the screen, the locks disengage using a current sensitive metal that warps when a charge is applied to it. When open, there is no flex at the joint, which was a concern of mine as it seemed like a weak pivot point, even when pushing down with the palm of my hand at the keyboard, there is no noticeable flex. As part of the design, the processor and memory was placed above the keyboard area, which cleverly allows for air ventilation below the laptop and when used on your lap, prevents your legs and wrist from getting warm. The keyboard is chiclet styled, made with metal rather than painted plastic. Two speakers are hidden underneath the R and I keys on the keyboard, while a third downward facing speaker is on the bottom of the laptop.

Now that introductions are out of the way, I'll give you some of my observations on the laptop.

- The solid state drive allows the laptop to boot fast, 15 seconds fast! After pressing the power button, it only takes the laptop 15 seconds to get to the windows login screen.
- It is very comfortable to use on the lap. This was a concern of mine as the unconventional style looked like it would dig into my lap. I was pleasantly surprised that this was not the case, and in fact was more comfortable overall, especially when compared with my Macbook Pro (which is akin to using a clothing iron on your lap). The Adamo XPS weighs only about 2 lbs overall, which really is no heavier than a paperback book, and since Dell placed the highest heat generating parts (memory and CPU) above the keyboard where it is furthest from your lap and wrists, my lap stays nice and cool. I am continuously amazed at how it feels like I am typing on thin air while I am using the laptop on my lap.
- The paint Dell chose to use to label the keys on the keyboard is annoying. It feels terrible when my nails slide over the key labels on the metal keyboard. It is like sliding your nails from a smooth glass surface to a surface made of sandpaper. It also makes me concerned that the labels will scratch off over time.
- For touch-typists like me, the lack of ridges on the J and F keys is another added annoyance.
- The buttons on the trackpad are springy and soft, nice!
- The computer comes with Fast Access Facial Recognition, which allows for you to use your face to login to the computer. From my experience, it works very well, and adds to that futuristic feel when all you need to do is sit down in front of your "thinnest laptop in the world" and watch it login for you.
- Center of gravity. With the unusual form factor, stability was a concern. The angle between the screen and keyboard cannot be opened greater than 60 degrees, which is a bummer when you are sitting close to the laptop. However, as all the heavy components are in the keyboard area, stability or the danger of tipping over was a non-issue.
-The display is VERY bright; it almost hurts my eyes to use it indoors above 50% brightness. The laptop has a built in light sensor next to the power button that adjusts the brightness of the screen automatically. Colors are nice but viewing angles on the screen is average, colors start to look "off" at 70 degrees away from looking straight at the screen. I guess I was just spoiled from using tablet pcs, which have very wide viewing angles.
- The battery is a pain to figure out how to remove. Dell designed the laptop so that you can "hot-swap" the batteries, that is, you can simply put the laptop to sleep and swap the batteries out without needing to boot the computer up again (it has a small internal battery that allows you 30 seconds to change the batteries). After much fiddling and being afraid of snapping the battery, I finally figured out how to properly remove the battery. Close the laptop and place it upside down, so that the battery is at the top facing away from you, the Dell logo on the underside should be upside-down. Using both hands, place the nails of your fingers in the crevice of the battery and apply a gentle force inwards towards the center of the laptop. While doing so, use your left hand's thumb to engaging the battery release lock, the battery should pop out with no resistance at all when done right. What were they thinking?
- Battery life with the standard battery is mediocre. Dell bundled a battery saving software that automatically turns off Windows Aero and engages CPU throttling to help save battery, but even then I only squeak by with 2.5 hours of usage with wifi.
- Even with using Intel's ULV processor sipping 10 Watts max, the computer feels extremely peppy, it has no problem multitasking with Hulu videos, working on Word and Excel, while surfing the internet at the same time. That said, it is not a gaming laptop, so don't expect it to play graphics-intensive games.

Overall, with minimum compromises, mainly in battery life, I feel Dell has created an engineering marvel. It is a product that truly showcases how far personal computing technology has brought us. I feel as if I made the right purchasing decision.

ASUS Eee PC 1015PED-PU17-RD 10.1-Inch Red Netbook - Up to 13 Hours of Battery Life

Before I go into the details, let me just say this is a great little netbook. I am very happy with the purchase. So here we go...

First, this netbook DOES NOT have USB 3.0. Asus has done a great job of confusing everyone about this. Some early reports indicated it would have USB 3.0. The Asus website says, "Availability is dependent on selected model, country or operator support. Check with your local ASUS website for more details." Say what?!? And to top it off, the Asus support site has a USB 3.0 driver. Well, USB 3.0 ports are blue and the 1015PED I purchased does not have any blue ports. When I load the USB 3.0 driver, it says "No USB 3.0 chip found". I would love to be wrong about this but I don't think I am.

Next, there is an option to backup the recovery information to a USB stick when you hit F9 at boot. WARNING: Restoring the backup from the USB stick DOES NOT create a true factory hard drive image. It DOES NOT restore the recovery partition or Express Gate! If you restore from the USB stick, you lose the recovery partition for good! You can no longer hit F9 and restore from the hard drive and the Express Gate button will not work. You will only be able to restore from the USB stick and it will create one big partition with Windows 7 Starter and all the wonderful bloatware. Also, the manual says you need a USB stick greater than 16GB. False... The backup only takes 10GB.

I needed to run some legacy apps so I dumped Windows 7 Starter and loaded Windows XP Pro. Although I download most of my drivers directly from the chip manufacturers, I still have to give Asus credit for putting all XP drivers on their support site! Well, almost all the drivers... As of this writing, there's no BlueTooth driver. However, I discovered the Dell DW375 BlueTooth module driver will work fine. (Broadcom doesn't make their Widcomm BlueTooth drivers available to end users. Lame...)

So, have you ever loaded XP from a USB stick??? 1) Write zeros to the 1015PED HD with WDC DLG. 2) Create a bootable BartPE USB stick and don't forget the AHCI drivers or the ramdisk from Windows Server 2003 SP1. 3) Slipstream the AHCI drivers into XP SP3 using nLite and copy the i386 directory to the BartPE USB stick. 4) Partition the HD using diskpart and format with A43. 5) Install XP, load the drivers and updates and you're done. Congratulations! You now have a masters degree in computer science!!!

Now for some pros/cons/etc.

Battery life - Wow! It's kind of impossible to say how many hours it will last for you because people will use this machine differently. That said, I'm very impressed with the battery life for my application. It doesn't come close to 13 hours but I didn't expect it to. The application I'm running is continuously CPU and graphic intensive.

The matte screen - Very nice. I specifically wanted a matte screen because I plan to use it outside quite a bit. The screen is still washed out in sunlight but it's much better than a glossy screen which you can barely see at all.

Speed - Not sure. It's hard for me to compare the performance to other netbooks. Obviously, a clean copy of XP blows away the bloated version of Windows 7 Starter that it came with. I would guess all Atom netbooks are fairly close. For what it's worth, I'm happy with the performance.

Touch pad - It's great! It's large and the touch pad software supports quite a few gestures that make it easy to navigate.

Keyboard - Ummm... I'm ultra picky on my keyboards. I like keyboards with concave, textured keys with a long travel and weak finger pressure compensation. Needless to say, I hate this keyboard. However, I don't hate it anymore than any other netbook I've used.

No LED for caps lock! Yet we have TWO power LEDs?!? Asus uses a program called CapsHook to alert you when the caps lock key is pressed. Just what we need... another program to take up memory and CPU on a resource limited netbook.

Video performance - Weak by design. YouTube 480 full screen at best. Forget about 720. But this netbook wasn't designed for video. You already knew that, right?

As someone else mentioned, the outside of the case is matte and the inside is shiny. Asus should have stayed with the matte theme throughout.

I actually like some of the function (Fn) buttons Asus puts on the keyboard. In particular, they have one for Task Manager and one to cut the LCD backlight.

All the stickers where you rest your palms came off fairly easy with no residual residue. The Atom and Windows 7 stickers put up a fight but they eventually came off.

So yes... I got what I wanted: A netbook with long battery life and a matte screen with decent performance. If this is what you're looking for, I highly recommend the Asus 1015PED.

just bought this red ASUS Eee 1015PED-PU17(-RD).

BLUF:
goods - so far unbeatable battery life, good size and light weight, blutooth ready
bads - horrible speaker (cannot overcome with earphone), awkward keyboard positions (prone to typos), poor at picking up weak wifi signals....

detail:
i bought it for travel purpose and not been happy carrying larger laptop (recently been using HP and macpro 15") due to carrying weight.

much happier about this little guys weight and size. i'm also nicely surprized about battery life. most of times reviews focus so much on technical aspects that combined use (heavy video playing>> web surf, and word processing) dont typically give practical info on "true" battery life. however i'm totally happy about battery life which i havent gone <50% battery life on typical 6 hours of heavy use.

i'm disappointed about audio problem. i read previous review about poor audio but i thought i could overcome by using earphone like my other laptops but i couldnt (even adjusting audio control to various recommended environment without a hope). just cant get loud enough. so bad enough for me to consider not buying ASUS again since i would have to carry an additional amplified speakers so that i can hear the media.

i would imagine keyboard issue is similar to using other netbooks - i'm keeping missing the shift key on right side and pushing arrow keys due to their proximity.

also i often work in areas with weak signals and often i would have hard time picking up signals when other laptops have lesser of an issue. since other netbook brands are not having similar problem (or lesser maybe), i think it's ASUS issue just like audio.
